Parking in New York
Coming by car? Driving into the centre of New York is slow and parking is expensive. Here is where to park near the sights, the cheaper Park & Ride option, and what you need to know about the Low Emission Zone.
🚫 Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
Driving into Manhattan at or below 60th Street costs a Congestion Relief Zone toll: $9 for a car with E-ZPass in the peak period (5:00-21:00 on weekdays, 9:00-21:00 on weekends) and $2.25 overnight, charged at most once per day. Tolls by Mail rates are up to 50% higher. The toll is planned to rise to $12 in 2028 and $15 in 2031. On top of that come the bridge and tunnel tolls, such as the Port Authority crossings from New Jersey.
- Zone: local streets and avenues in Manhattan south of and including 60th Street. The FDR Drive, the West Side Highway/Route 9A and the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel connections to West Street are excluded.
- Passenger cars pay no more than once a day (12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.). You are not charged on days when the car stays parked or only drives inside the zone.
- Crossing credit: with E-ZPass in the peak period, entering via the Lincoln, Holland, Queens-Midtown or Hugh L. Carey tunnel lowers the toll by up to $3. No credit overnight.
- Port Authority crossings from New Jersey (Lincoln and Holland tunnels, George Washington Bridge) are cashless and charged only entering New York: for a car $14.79 off-peak and $16.79 peak with a NY/NJ E-ZPass account, $23.30 Tolls by Mail. Peak is weekdays 6-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m., weekends 11 a.m.-9 p.m. (July 2026 rate table).
Foreign cars: Without an E-ZPass linked to the number plate, a Tolls by Mail bill goes to the registered owner of the car; for a rental car that is the rental company, so ask what it charges before you drive in. E-ZPass discounts at the Port Authority crossings apply only to New York and New Jersey accounts. An out-of-state E-ZPass gets the E-ZPass rate in the Congestion Relief Zone if the plate is registered on the account.
Fine: Not read: the penalty for unpaid tolls is not described on the pages we read.

Street parking
Street parking in Manhattan is limited by Alternate Side Parking (ASP): signs with a P and a broom mark the street-cleaning days when you must move the car. The city suspends ASP on some holidays and for bad weather or emergencies; check NYC 311, Notify NYC or the @NYCASP account the same day. Meters, hydrants and no-standing signs are enforced strictly, and parking is usually harder than the drive.
Tips
Do not drive into Manhattan
The subway is faster and cheaper than any car below 60th Street. Leave the car at a New Jersey station lot such as Secaucus Junction and take the train in.
Know the toll before you cross
From New Jersey a car pays $23.30 at the Port Authority crossings without a NY/NJ E-ZPass (Tolls by Mail), and the Congestion Relief Zone toll comes on top.
Ask your rental company
Tolls by Mail bills go to the registered owner, i.e. the rental company. Ask about its E-ZPass option and fees before you pick up the car.
Check Alternate Side Parking the same day
A spot can be fine on Monday and a ticket on Tuesday morning. Read every sign and look at NYC 311 for suspensions.
Cashless everywhere
All Port Authority crossings are cashless and no longer take cash. Bring a bank card.
